By 1995, Gregory McGuire would write and publish Wicked: the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. It’s no easy feat for a musical to descend upon Broadway and scoop up three Tony Awards, seven Drama Desk Awards, and a Grammy Award for the original cast album, but Wicked’s done it. It is also no easy feat for a brand new musical to break box office records around the world, while placing among the greatest productions that grossed over $1 billion, and later taking the place of the world’s second-highest selling musical, but Wicked’s done it. It’s written on the walls: Wicked simply keeps defying gravity.
The truth is that Wicked has the power to turn even the biggest into a swooning fan. The magical story, based upon L. Frank Baum's classic novel, ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’, follows the story of two very unlikely friends and their journey of becoming the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good. With a deep exploration of unexpected friendship between two very different personalities, contrasting outlooks, and a shared love interest, and the deeper social commentary on the corrupt rule of the Wizard of Oz threatening a seemingly perfect world, everybody and anybody is bound to get drawn into the smart storyline, quippy theatrics, well-developed characters, and, of course, composer Stephen Schwartz’s soaring and memorable melodies.
